A strong portfolio should remain consistent from preparations through a dark reception. Look at family groups, guests, transitions and difficult weather as well as signature portraits. Full galleries reveal timing, editing and storytelling more accurately than social media.
Check relevant destination experience honestly
Previous work at the exact venue can help, but it is not essential. More important is evidence that the photographer can assess unfamiliar light, travel with reliable equipment and coordinate with planners. Ask for relevant full stories, not an unsupported list of venues.
Ask about travel and logistics
Confirm what the quoted price includes, when travel is booked, whether accommodation or local transport is extra and how delays are handled. For islands or remote venues, discuss arrival time and backup routes rather than assuming same-day travel will work.
Confirm pricing, delivery and the contract
Compare coverage and deliverables, not only the starting fee. The contract should define hours, team size, image delivery, deadline, payments and travel. My European coverage ranges from €1,900 to €9,500, with a 30% booking deposit and typical delivery within 14–25 days.
Choose the person you can communicate with
Your photographer will stay close for much of the day. A useful first conversation should cover your people, priorities and concerns, not just a sales presentation. Clear questions and specific answers are a better signal than generic promises.
How far in advance should I book a wedding photographer abroad?
For a fixed peak-season weekend, contact photographers once the venue and date are confirmed. Around twelve months is a useful planning horizon, although shorter-notice availability is possible.
